Short answer
With UGC you pay a creator for videos you run as your own ads. With influencer marketing you pay a creator to post to their own followers, so you're buying their audience. A UGC video costs about $150 to $300 in 2026; a micro-influencer's Instagram post (10,000 to 100,000 followers) runs about $500 to $1,500. Use UGC for ads you test and scale, and influencers for reach and trust.
Both use real people talking on camera, which is why they get mixed up. The difference is who the video is for.
| UGC creator | Influencer | |
|---|---|---|
| What you're paying for | Videos you own the use of | A post to their followers |
| Where it runs | Your ad account, as your ad | Their account, as their post |
| Do followers matter? | No | Yes, they set the price |
| Who controls the script | You, or the agency writing it | Shared, the influencer keeps their voice |
| How it's used | Paid ads you test and scale | Reach, launches, social proof |
The basics of who appears in UGC ads and what they can say are covered in what UGC ads are.
| What you buy | Typical 2026 rate | Source |
|---|---|---|
| UGC video, base rate | $150 to $300 | Influee |
| UGC video, average creator payout | $154 | Collabstr, 2026 report |
| Nano influencer (1K to 10K followers), Instagram post | $100 to $300 | Later, July 2026 |
| Micro influencer (10K to 100K), Instagram post | $500 to $1,500 | Later |
| Micro influencer (10K to 100K), Reel or TikTok | $800 to $2,500 | Later |
| Macro influencer (100K to 1M) | $2,500 to $10,000 or more | Later |
| Mega influencer (1M or more) | $10,000 to $50,000 or more | Later |
Real deals often land below those ranges. Across 1,527 completed paid deals from January 2025 to June 2026, the median fee was $150 for creators with 10,000 to 50,000 followers and $517 for 250,000 to 1 million (OpenSponsorship data via inBeat).
Rights cost extra on both sides. Later says running an influencer's content as a paid ad typically adds 30 to 50% to the base rate, and UGC usage rights add a similar 20 to 50% for 3 to 12 months. Every line of a UGC price list is broken down in our UGC rate card guide.
The common setup is to pay influencers for reach and to use UGC for the ads that do the selling. The two meet in whitelisting: you pay an influencer for permission to run their post as an ad from their account, through Meta's partnership ads or TikTok's Spark Ads. How Spark Ads, partnership ads and whitelisting work covers the setup and what to agree first.
An influencer has to disclose a paid relationship in their own post. The FTC requires disclosure of any connection that "might materially affect the weight or credibility of the endorsement," and that includes money or free product (16 CFR 255.5).
A UGC ad runs from your account and is labelled "Sponsored" by the platform, but the creator still can't be presented as a customer unless they used the product. The full rules are in what UGC ads are.
